How Roofing Contractors Get Found by AI (AI Visibility for Roofers)
By Adev Aarons, Founder of Specularis · Updated August 2026
When a homeowner needs a roof, they increasingly ask ChatGPT or Perplexity “who’s a good roofer near me” before they ever open Google. The AI names a few companies, and that’s the shortlist. We tested 40 Florida roofing sites the way ChatGPT reads them, and 45% were invisible to AI. Nearly a third block the crawler outright, usually without knowing it. If that’s your site, you’re not on the list, and the homeowner never reaches the page where your ads or rankings could have caught them.
The fix is straightforward. Here’s the playbook.
Why roofers get left out of AI answers
Two things keep a roofing company invisible, and most owners have no idea either is happening.
The crawler block. A lot of roofing sites return a 403 or a “checking your browser” page to the AI bots. It’s usually a default setting inside a security plugin or a host’s firewall. Your site loads fine for a person, but ChatGPT’s crawler gets turned away, so to AI your company doesn’t exist. In our test, 30% of roofing sites were doing this.
No machine-readable identity. Even when AI can reach the page, plenty of roofing sites say nothing a machine can use. No schema, nothing that states “this is a roofing contractor serving Tampa.” AI won’t guess. See the full numbers in our study of 561 Florida businesses.
How AI decides which roofer to cite
AI names companies it can clearly identify, that independent sources back up, and whose content answers the homeowner’s question. For roofing, three signals carry the most weight:
- Reviews and reputation. Google reviews and directory ratings tell AI you’re real and trusted. For a big, urgent purchase like a roof, this is huge.
- Directory and locator presence. Angi, HomeAdvisor, the BBB, and manufacturer certifications (GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed) are strong corroboration AI trusts.
- Clear service and area. Schema and content that state you’re a roofing contractor and the cities you cover, so AI knows exactly what you do and where.
Step 1: Open the door to the AI crawlers
This is the one most roofers get wrong without knowing. Make sure your firewall, security plugin, and robots.txt let GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot through. Blocking them does nothing for security, real attackers ignore the rules these bots follow. It just deletes you from the answer. Test it: request your homepage as a GPTBot user-agent and see if you get a 403.
Step 2: Add RoofingContractor schema
AI identifies you through structured data. Add RoofingContractor schema (a LocalBusiness type) with your company name, address, phone, the areas you serve, your services, and an aggregateRating from your reviews. Without it, AI can reach your page but still can’t tell it’s looking at a roofer in a specific market.
Step 3: Get Google Business Profile and reviews right
Claim your Google Business Profile, fill it out completely, and build a steady flow of real reviews. For “who should I hire to fix my roof” questions, reviews are one of the strongest signals AI leans on. Ask every happy customer, and make it easy.
Step 4: Complete your directory and manufacturer profiles
Claim and complete Angi, HomeAdvisor, Yelp, the BBB, and Nextdoor, plus any manufacturer certifications you hold (GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Preferred). Keep your name, address, and phone identical across all of them and your site. Consistent profiles across trusted sources are exactly what turns an AI’s guess into a confident recommendation.
Step 5: Write pages that answer homeowner questions
Homeowners ask AI practical questions before they ask about a contractor. “How much does a new roof cost in Florida.” “How long does a roof replacement take.” “Do I need a permit to replace my roof.” Publish pages that answer these directly. When your site is the one that answers, AI starts citing you as the source, and your company name comes with it.

Frequently asked
Why isn't ChatGPT recommending my roofing company?
Usually one of two reasons. Either your site blocks the AI crawler (30% of the Florida roofing sites we tested do) or it has no structured data telling AI you're a roofer in a specific area. Both are quick fixes. Run a free audit to see which one is you.
Which directories matter most for roofers and AI?
Google Business Profile first, then Angi, HomeAdvisor, Yelp, the BBB, and Nextdoor. Manufacturer locators like GAF Master Elite and Owens Corning Preferred also carry weight. Keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere.
Do reviews help a roofing company show up in AI answers?
A lot. For 'who's a good roofer near me' questions, reviews are one of the strongest signals AI uses. A steady flow of real Google reviews tells AI you're real and trusted.
How long until my roofing site shows up in AI answers?
Unblocking the crawler and adding schema take effect fast, usually about a week. Reviews and off-site presence build over a couple of months as new sources get crawled. *Adev Aarons is the founder of Specularis, an AI visibility company that gets local businesses cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
